Benzoyl peroxide also common known as BP is a staple of acne treatment. It is generally considered to be safe and effective for treating acne. It is currently available in a variety of formulations and concentrations. The most stable of all formations is actually the gel form and is preferred over creams and lotions. BP in gel formulations also allow for a more consistent release of the active ingredient.
BP can also be found in certain cleansers which are especially for the treatment of large areas such as chest and back for the treatment of acne during shower. Generally people with dry skin will be recommended to start with a BP product of lower concentration. As with all tropical medications, the product should be applied to the entire affected area twice a day.

BP also has the advantage of not being associated with antimicrobial resistance, For this simple reason, it is often used in combination with other oral or tropical antibiotics to increase efficacy and minimize resistance.
The main limitation of BP for some acne patients is concentration-dependent stinging, irritation of the skin, contact dermatitis, dryness and bleaching fabric or hair it comes in contact with. The contact reaction in the skin is seen as redness, scaling and itching or burning. These side effects usually occur within the first days to weeks of treatments and improve with continued use of the product.
When looking for tropical treatments for acne, look for labels that indicate that the medication is designed specifically for the treatment of acne and not just for general infections of the skin.
