What causes warts? It's a question millions of people ask every day, because they themselves, or a member of their family are suffering from them. They are caused by a virus called the human papillomavirus - known for short as HPV. This virus causes a substance in the top layer of your skin, called keratin, to grow too fast.
Different types of warts
There are different types.
Common. As the name suggests, this is the most common type and has a rough surface, rather like a cauliflower. They may occur on any part of the body, Kali carbonicum but most commonly are found on joints such as your knuckles or knees.
Verrucas. These are usually found on the soles of the feet. They can be painful because the weight of the person tends to push them upwards and into the skin.
Plane. These are usually found on children and are flat. They tend to be found on the hands, legs and face.
Filiform. These are long in shape, and they can be found on the armpits, neck and eyelids.
What can I do to prevent them happening?
Because what causes warts is a virus, the only thing you can do to prevent them occurring is to try not to come in contact with this. The virus can be passed on by skin to skin contact or sharing clothes or towels. If you have warts, it is possible to spread the virus around your body by scratching them, sucking your fingers or shaving. If you skin is damaged or wet (such as at a swimming pool) then you are more likely to be affected by the virus if you come in contact with it.
Your doctor will usually be able to diagnose them just by sight. Very occasionally the doctor may take a tissue sample to examine under a microscope. There are many different types of the HPV virus which are the cause of warts.
